A fine dining review: French bistro cuisine

[embedit snippet=”bloglovin”]

It is a rare occasion that my honey and I have the opportunity to go out for dinner, nevermind fine dining; however, life has been so crazy since the birth of our son, we felt it was long overdue!
We had talked about wanting to check out Resto Gare for several months and on Saturday night, that was our choice venue for a well deserved dinner for two. We had called ahead and made a reservation for approx 6:45pm. We arrived right on time and were promptly seated in the main dining area, which was perfect for what we needed. I think next time we’ll sit in the train section for a more lively atmosphere.
Appetizer
There were so many great choices but our waiter recommended the Petits Paquets de Bison – bison potstickers in a cherry BBQ sauce. I would call them delectable, perfect little bites and they were well seasoned.
Entree
The first choice we both wanted was Boeuf Bourguignonne – a braised beef dish however for whatever reason it was already sold out. That seemed to be the case with several menu items as we overheard from the tables close to us. As a result, I ended up having the Gnocchi Maison with sauteed garlic shrimp and Mikey had the Filet Mignon. The gnocchi dish was amazing, perfect proportions of shrimp, gnocchi, asparagus, sundried tomatoes and garlic all brought together with a succulent sauce. The filet, slightly overcooked than the medium rare he requested but very tasty nonetheless.
Dessert
Assorted pies were mainly offered but again upon our waiters recommendation we decided to have the house specialty, Maple Syrup pie. I’m more of a “cake” girl, but let me tell ya, I’d eat that pie every day if I could! The pie crust was so flaky and light and the filling could’ve been overwhelming but it had just the right amount of maple syrup to make it a perfect way to end our evening.
Overall
Our dining experience was a 4 out of 5, taking into consideration that the last time we went out for dinner was a very long time ago! Service was great, our only concern, which can be a good or bad thing for a restaurant, is the fact that so many items were sold out for what seemed to be early on in the dinner service.

We shall return, and next time I’ll be sure to take pics! For other reviews in Winnipeg, be sure to check out Urbanspoon.
