Royal Winnipeg Ballet Celebrates 75 Years With Stellar Performances #ExploreMB

Winnipeg is a mecca for arts and culture, and as someone who was born and raised in this city, I have made it my mission to share as many events and activities with each and every one of you as possible! My biggest pet peeve is when people who live here say there’s nothing to do. Let’s talk about all of the great things there ARE to do!

I’ll never forget the first time I went to the ballet. I went with my mom and my sister and we went to see the annual production of The Nutcracker. It was truly magical! For anyone who knows me, you know how hard it is for me to keep quiet, yet at the ballet, I was silent because I was so mesmerized by the art of storytelling through dance, (and of course the fact that I had no choice to be quiet).

Royal Winnipeg Ballet is celebrating 75 years of amazing performances, so you can imagine the caliber of the shows they will be showcasing this upcoming season.

Beginning October 2, 2014, the inaugural show of the season is called: Going Home Star – Truth and Reconciliation.

Going Home Star – Truth and Reconciliation explores the world of Annie, a young, urban First Nations woman adrift in a contemporary life of youthful excess. But when she meets Gordon, a longhaired trickster disguised as a homeless man, she’s propelled into a world she’s always sensed but never seen. Not only do they travel the streets of this place but also the roads of their ancestors, learning to accept the other’s burdens as the two walk through the past and toward the future. Together, both Annie and Gordon learn that without truth, there is no reconciliation.

Based on the Residential School system experience and the encompassing stories, this new show begins the season with a strong theme and message . It is impactful to the Company dancers and staff in many ways. They all attended cross-cultural awareness sessions in addition to traditional ceremonies where they were immersed in some aspects of Aboriginal culture. The result is that they can truly tell the story because the KNOW the story.

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet is  just one of many venues where you can experience Culture on Every Corner in Winnipeg.

I urge you to get out there and experience the impressive shows offered this season!
