3 Great Reasons to Make Save-On-Foods Your Primary Grocery Store

The time has finally come and the new Save-On-Foods stores are all open in Winnipeg just in time for holiday entertaining!

My anticipation leading up to the grand opening was slightly more energetic than usual, so you can imagine how excited I was to be a part of it all!

We all love things that are new and shiny but it really is a testament to when you enter the store and feel the pride and sense of community that the Save-On-Foods stores will nurture in Winnipeg.

OK, that’s my slightly gushing first take of what I felt about this past week, but as usual you guys know I love to show and share how I feel through videos and pictures, so let’s take a look at my top three reasons that you’ll keep coming back to Save-On-Foods!

1) SELECTION

I could not believe the things I was able to taste not only at the pre-grand opening event but on my tours of each grand opening as well.

Oh my gosh the Wing Bar, it’s my fave.

I kept going back to it over and over again. I couldn’t get enough of them because they were so delicious and cooked to perfection. Loved the variety of flavours (chili lime is to die for).  It’s definitely an item that I will pick up for months to come.  Save-On-Foods makes it so easy for you to pick them up already cooked  and ready to go, with the packaging to match! I need that type of convenience in my life and the quality is the icing on the cake!

Speaking of cake, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I want to live in the Sweet Shoppe! Let me tell you about the cheesecake I had…

I literally cannot express in words the reaction that came out of my mouth after I had my first bite. Oh my goodness, it was delectable, it was luxurious, it was divine! I loved it so much. The candy apples, the chocolate covered marshmallows, the popcorn – all unreal! They even had Jet Fuel popcorn (Winnipeg Jets colours)

I also noticed the freshly squeezed orange juice that is made in-store fresh every day. (mmm that’s definitely on my next shopping list)

The fact that they have so many local business items on the shelves shows the support that Save-On-Foods has for it’s community. They even had Pic-A-Pop people!

I can’t say enough about the international market area at Northgate. It’s a force to be reckoned with! They have literally every Filipino/Asian food product available.

The Caribbean section had a lot of familiar items that I would like but I’m looking forward to talking to Tim, the store manager to see if Save-On-Foods can bring in some of my other faves. I love that they take the feedback from their customers and they do their best to implement it.

2) SENSE OF COMMUNITY

A) Exclusive Event

It was such an honour to attend the exclusive pre-grand opening event and concert on the Friday night before the official grand opening.

I actually wasn’t sure what  or who I expected to see there but anyone who deals in the food industry was there. There were food manufacturers, dieticians, radio contest winners, media and more! Everyone came together in the store to mingle, mix and interact with each other in an amazing setting.

I think that my favourite part of that night was dancing with Darrell, the president of Save-On Foods at the Randy Bachman concert!

Even Randy was very specific about the pride that Save-On-Foods has within local communities and that will be no different in Winnipeg considering they practically tailored their stores to our city. And I mean, c’mon it was a free Randy Bachman Concert!!!

The food was flowing,  the concert had everyone in a fabulous yet nostalgic mood and we danced the night away. It was just really well done.

I loved the cute lil polar bear snack packs everyone took home that night too!

B) Grand Opening Tours
I loved chatting with new customers and folks who have previously shopped at Save-On-Foods in Western Canada. They were clearly so happy for Save-On Foods to be here!

My dad and I bumped into so many people we knew!

Take a look at this first impressions playlist from each store, you might see someone you know! It was great to distribute More Rewards points to folks who felt comfortable enough to have this crazy girl with the selfie stick and the microphone all up in their face! Hahaha

Winnipeggers were out in droves, so it was a bit of mad scramble in the parking lot of the Northgate and some long lineups.

I am happy to report that regardless of those hiccups everyone stayed calm, everyone stayed positive, and the store managers and their staff were overly professional and welcoming, I loved that the most!

As my dad said this is great for our city we needed something new, we needed new options and we needed new competition in Winnipeg!

3) VALUE

Save the best for last they say! The Always Lowest Guaranteed pricing is going to be a game changer for me and my family. Knowing that someone has already done the work for me is awesome. As I walked through each store, I was checking out all of the items I normally buy at the competitor and yep, the pricing was equal or less. Couple that with the More Rewards program and it will be tough to want to go anywhere else!

Overall, what a success! I’m looking forward to trying out some of the services that Save-On-Foods provides such as the online shopping where you can either pick up or have your groceries delivered.

  1. I was too busy the week of the grand openings, but am planning to go this week! I look forward to seeing what they have to offer, particularly before the holidays.

  2. Living in BC, the commute would be too far for me to check out the 3 new stores in Winnipeg but I do frequent the Save-on in my town 🙂

  3. Yes! I went to the one in Bridgewater. They have a large selection of produce! I was able to find things there that I couldn’t find at other grocery stores.

  4. I’ve been to the St. James and Northgate. Both very impressive. The selection is out of this world. I just wish the one closest to me (St. James) was as big as Northgate. And wah, they have a Starbucks but only limited items, no chai tea lattes.

I think the only drawback may be parking, could be brutal around Christmas.

  5. I haven’t had a chance to come into town yet, but I loved SoF when I lived in Alberta so I’m sure all the locations are great!

  6. I’ve been to the Northgate location and was amazed, didn’t know what to look at first. You can tell who’s first time it is when they walk in lol The selection of everything is incredible. I was excited to see an old classmate working in the deli who was more than happy to let me sample an amazing prosciutto!

  7. I recently shopped at the new store in Bridgewater. It was a fantastic experience! Amazing selection, high quality products and incredibly friendly staff. I plan to become a regular!
