Tips to stay sane while on the Internet

Internet Information Overload

Talk about information overload!!!

If you’re like me, you read a lot of blogs, tweets, and Facebook updates or other Internet news on a frequent basis to see what’s happening in the world right? There are always folks posting about how they can help you in some way with changing your life.

When does it become too much?

It’s easy to be bombarded and lose yourself with people telling you what you should eat/drink, how you should exercise, how you should parent, what you should buy, how you can make more money etc. There seem to be so many “experts”.

Who do you listen to?

Well, I believe I’m an intelligent 37 year old woman (yep, I have no qualms with sharing my age), I’m a pretty awesome parent (so says my kids haha), I’m healthy (but not necessarily fit and I’m working on that), and I’m not a millionaire but I have excellent credit, minimal debt and a mortgage, all of which I’ve accomplished through hard work. I’ve made many choices in my life to get to where I am now and it wasn’t from following every fad or advice from any and everyone online!

I have a few tips I’d like to share that work for me as I meander through this crazy Internet maze. To some, this list is a given, but for others (including some of my own friends and family), it needs to be reviewed!

MY PERSONAL TIPS TO KEEP YOU SANE ON THE ‘NET

1) Take it all in with a grain of salt
The Internet is a beast! Do your research! Check your facts by using reputable, legitimate companies and individuals. Always get references.

2) Stay away from gimmicks
Mom always said, if it sounds too good to be true it usually is! If the person has been doing something for many years and still isn’t making a ton of money, what makes you think you will any faster?

3) Follow your gut instincts
Does something you read just not seem right? Did the person representing the idea or product rub you the wrong way? On to the next!

4) Take a break from the Net
Turn off, power down, step away from the computer, smartphone, and tablet! Don’t turn on the TV (it’s just as bad). Hang out with your family, spend time with friends, read a book, go for a walk/drive, check out a new restaurant, join a fitness class, or anything that disconnects you from the ‘tech’ but connects you with the ‘real’!

These are just a few tips but I’m sure you have some too! How do you decide what’s good for you and what’s not on the Internet?
