Run for the Cure Winnipeg

Reduce Your Risk of #Breast #Cancer By Doing #OneNewThing

It’s been almost a month since I lost my mom to breast cancer.  It’s still so surreal. I go about my days as per usual, continuing my regular routine knowing in the back of my mind that I will never see or talk to her again. It’s important to keep busy, and ensure that I am able to share my feelings and emotions, thank goodness for this blog! It will get better with time, I know that, but I also know that my life will never be the same.

I recently participated in the CIBC Run for the Cure here in Winnipeg as captain for Team Bells and Whistles.  What an amazing event! It was so great to such large volumes of people who were there as supporters, survivors and even newly diagnosed. I can’t wait to get better organized for next year’s run on October 5, 2014.

The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation is currently running a very cool campaign called #OneNewThing.  It’s about making lifestyle changes to reduce your risk for breast cancer. Women across the country are sharing their stories about the #OneNewThing they are doing to live healthier and hopefully prevent themselves from getting breast cancer.

What #OneNewThing will I do to continue to reduce my risk of breast cancer? Maybe learn to swim, learn to skate, yoga? There are so many things I haven’t done!

I do know that I need to get some screening tests done and urge my sister to do that as well. The doctors were surprised at how aggressive mom’s cancer was, so we need to be extra diligent.

I will continue to get better at eating healthy foods, increasing my physical activities and ensuring my daughters do the same. I’m always pushing my limits and boundaries on a daily basis, this will be no different.

What’s your #OneNewThing to reduce your risk of breast cancer?

Share your story, I look forward to sharing mine!

  1. Hi Natalie,
So sorry to hear about your mom. Good for you for participating in the run this year. I guess I’m among the lucky ones, my mom has so far won the battle against breast cancer. Glad to see people talking about all the things we can all do to lower the risks.
It was nice meeting you at Blissdom. Take care and be in touch!
p.s. Let me know if you decide to learn to swim. I may be able to help you find Red Cross Swim program for adults in your area. 🙂

  2. Hi Natalie,

Nice to be over at your blog from Triberr, and I think your title surely pulled me up here this time 🙂

Like you, I lost my Mom to lung cancer a few years back, and yes, just as you mentioned one thing we need to change – we actually need to change a lot in our lifestyle, because we are more prone to cancer as compared to others. Even my kids are more at a risk I’d say, so one just needs to be extra careful, get your screening done in time, mammograms, other tests and keep up-to-date. I agree about taking care of your health, which is foremost. Prevention is better than cure, isn’t it?

Thanks for sharing. Have a nice week ahead 🙂
