Celebrating 35 Years of Black History Month in Winnipeg

Black History Month is here!

February is a significant month for many people,  for me it signifies the celebration of the many accomplishments of black people past and present but it also keeps me grounded knowing the atrocities that have occurred in order for me to live the life I live today.

2016 marks 35 years that Black History Month has been officially recognized with activities and events here in Winnipeg. As a previous longstanding member of the committee, I have watched it grow and evolve into something magical. There are a broad range of activities from awards ceremonies to debating which is primarily youth focused and the always popular gospel concert.

This year’s committee led by sisters Nadia and Rhonda Thompson have outdone themselves and given us events and activities that will educate you, inspire you and capture the spirit of what Black History Month is all about.

Upward we thrive, celebrating 35! What a fabulous tag line for this milestone year.

While the committee plans a large amount events in the city, there are many other activities related to Black History Month happening in schools, churches and businesses.

Don’t forget to head on over to Manitoba Theatre for Young People (MTYP) from Feb 5 to Feb 14 to be wowed with a performance of The Power of Harriet Ta play that explores the life of Harriet Tubman, a formidable woman who helped free many people from the US slave trade and help them find safety in Canada.

Be sure to get out there, treat yourself and your family to multiple events before the end of the month! If you are aware of an event that hasn’t been listed, please list it in the comment section below.
