Celebrating #InternationalWomensDay With A Historic Event

Today I watched the live unveiling of Canada’s new $10 bill prominently displaying its first ever black Canadian woman and trailblazer, Viola Desmond.

I am always in awe and emotional when the elders take the podium at each event to give prayers and conduct traditional ceremonies. Barbara and Clarence Nepinak demonstrates such pride and emotion with their traditions.

One of my longtime friends Nadia Thompson, who is chair of the local Black History Month Committee, gave wonderful opening remarks about what this day means to us as women, but more importantly black women.

I was emotional, humbled and I teared up as her story was told and as her sister Wanda shared how proud she was. Wanda is my kindred spirit, she was humorous and engaging.

The new historic banknote also displays our very own Canadian Museum for Human Rights along with many other symbols of our rights and freedoms. Bravo!

What a glorious day! I am beaming with pride but at the same time recognize how much more still needs to be done.
