Winnipeg is so fortunate to have Canada’s longest surviving outdoor musical theatre, Rainbow Stage!
It’s no secret that I come from a musical family. Many years ago, 2003 I believe, my sister Lisa performed in her first role at Rainbow Stage. She was only a part of the ensemble of Footloose but when she sang “Let’s Hear It For The Boy”, everyone took notice. I have been to every show my sister has been in for the past 11 years, and musical theatre has never been so exciting!
Rainbow Stage primarily features Canadian talent and works hard to have local actors, musicians and production team members on staff. This year Rainbow Stage celebrates 60 years! Sixty years of infusing musical theatre into Winnipeg’s cultural landscape.
One of the cornerstone shows this year is The Little Mermaid. I have two daughters and let me tell you, we watched The Little Mermaid movie so many times that we could recite the script and sing every single song. I was so curious to see how this iconic movie would translate to the stage.
Let me tell you it does NOT disappoint! Lead actress Colleen Furlan IS Ariel, I kid you not. As a matter of fact, all of the roles are so well done, so authentic that when I closed my eyes, I thought I was watching the movie! Every one of the actors captured the essence of the characters in the movie.
Huge kudos to the folks who built the set and made the costumes. Not only is the show aurally appealing, it’s visually appealing. I loved the vibrant colours and the true likeness to creatures of the ocean. Overall it’s just a ton of fun for the whole family, no matter what age!
Oooh we LOVE The Little Mermaid! We have seen The Lion King and Beauty & The Beast, and we’d love to see a production of Ariel. Looks like a beautiful show for the family to enjoy!
I love Rainbow Stage, its great to be outside & enjoy wonderful theatre
