Having both a tween daughter and a teen daughter in this online age can be difficult to manage. They both have Facebook and a variety of other social media accounts. Sometimes it’s not enough to just talk to your kids about the need for privacy in the online realm. It’s nice to know that software like ESET Smart Security 6 is protecting your kids behind the scenes. It’s been pretty amazing so far, I have no loading issues or downtime with this software – it’s like it’s not even there!
Game requests, hoaxes of national companies giving away all of their products are plentiful on my Facebook timeline. I have been diligent in ensuring my daughters have as many privacy controls set up as possible, but some of these ‘requests’ can seem so real, and of course it could be coming from their closest friends. Having a ‘Facebook Friends Clean Up Day’ is something our family tries to do once every few months. Even Justin Bieber has fallen prey to questionable spam scams online, there are certain types of social media posts you just shouldn’t click on. ESET Smart Security 6 provides amazing online protection and also has a free Social Media Scanner that will that can alert you to malicious viruses or suspicious behaviour on your Facebook and Twitter profiles! Thankfully I scanned my profile and I’m virus free!
Haven’t bought ESET yet, but want to? You can still receive 15% off here.
So, not only do my daughters have social media accounts, they also have smartphones to access those accounts! Yes, I may in fact be crazy as I seem to love having to manage all of this fun! So what if they lose their phones? What if I leave my laptop at the coffee shop? (Although that is HIGHLY unlikely). Regardless, there are some simple tips to ensure that if they are stolen or lost, a thief would have a very hard time getting any information off of them:
1) Password-Protect It- Making your password extremely difficult is very helpful as that will significantly slow down the thief’s attempts to access your data.
2) Back It Up – It’s amazing how many people do not back up their computers, laptops or phones! Think of how much information is on there, would you want to lose it all in the matter of seconds? Set up a schedule and stick to it.
3) Track It – Many of the newer phones have specific programs to help track their location if lost or stolen, activate it!
4) Guard It – Keep your device close to you! Do not leave it on the passenger seat in the car while you run in to grab a coffee!
5) Encrypt It – If you must have sensitive data on your smartphone or computer, encrypt it in separate files or remove it all together and use encrypted removable media.
As I’ve been using the ESET software and reading their materials, it’s opened my eyes to the many ways the online world can be unfriendly. October is National Cyber Security Awareness month and ESET a leading company educating the general public on how to keep the cyberspace safe and secure.
